London Underground – St James’s Park station

There are 19 large roundels of the HILLINGDON type at St James’s Park station. The station is, of course, no deep-level tube station, but when focusing on the roundels and their surroundings (green and blue tiles!) one could almost believe to be in a Northern line station south of the river Thames.

Large roundels

Most of the large roundels look like this one.

This large roundel is an exception. I think it’s the only one that looks like that. Note the round shape of the apostrophe (which, to my knowledge, never ever was the valid shape of a Johnston apostrophe).

One small roundel

This picture was taken in 2017. It shows the small roundel on the eastbound platform (end of train). Its design is unlined; I would call it a small version of the HAMMERSMITH roundel type.

This picture was taken in 2022. It shows the same small roundel except that, of course, it was replaced. The new one is likely to stay in place, thanks to that oversized frame and the no-less-than-sixteen screws.

The typeface used is Johnston100. Note the apostrophe that begins, at the top, at an angle (like the New Johnston apostrophe, but unlike the original Johnston apostrophe the stroke of which began without inclination). The small letter T is a bit on the slim side, if it was a true small cap it would probably be a bit fatter.
